Mercerizing process principle:

  • Cotton fibers in high concentrations of caustic soda under the action of violent swelling, Na + ion volume is small not only into the amorphous area, but also into the crystalline area of part of the cotton fiber, and with a large number of water molecules into (1 Na + ion can take up to 66 water molecules), so that the molecules within the fiber rearrangement, this process is irreversible. The fiber changes from flat to cylindrical and the cross-section from waist-shaped to round. The crystallinity decreased from the original 70% to 50%, increasing the reaction performance, coupled with the role of tension, so that the fabric luster increased; molecular arrangement tends to stabilize, so the dimensional stability of the fabric after mercerization increased.

Determination of mercerization effect:

  • Mercerization effect determination available barium value (Ba value) to indicate the use of unmercerized cotton and mercerized cotton on barium hydroxide (Ba (OH) 2) adsorption performance changes to determine (mercerized cotton adsorption capacity is greater than the adsorption capacity of unmercerized cotton)

Mercerizing process

  • a. Caustic soda concentration in 105g / L no mercerization, cotton mercerization generally requires caustic soda concentration in 240g-280g / 1 (hemp fabrics, polyester-cotton fabrics usually use half mercerization process, caustic soda concentration in 150-180g / L or so)
    b. Temperature: mercerization is an exothermic reaction, low temperature is conducive to the reaction, but the temperature is too low caustic soda viscosity becomes large, is not conducive to penetration, generally room temperature for more, called cold mercerization (15-20 ℃) also has a hot mercerization (60 ℃, a
    (generally in the straight roller mercerizing machine using hot mercerizing process).
    c. Action time:
    Theoretically 20 seconds to 30 seconds to complete the mercerizing process, general production control from the roll of alkali to the reaction time of about 50 seconds to wash down. d. Tension:
    Gloss enhancement is obtained under the action of tension, and the form size is also achieved by the tension. e. Form stability needs to be de-tensioned when the cloth body caustic soda concentration should be less than 50g/1, otherwise, the form is not stable will shrink.   • Mercerizing equipment
    a. Cloth tongs mercerizing machine: weft to apply tension in the form of a cloth iron clamped after stretching the door width.
    Advantages: conducive to size control, glossiness better. Disadvantages: uneven tension, easy to produce wrinkle marks, easy to produce broken edge.
    b. Straight roller mercerizing machine: rely on the reverse effect of friction between the straight roller and the fabric, as the weft tension. Advantages: mercerizing uniformity, wide adaptability of varieties, can carry out hot alkali mercerizing. Disadvantages: not easy to control the width of the door.
